Is East or West Nusa Penida Better? A Host’s Guide to Choosing Your Perfect Route. If you are planning a trip to Nusa Penida, one of the questions I hear most often from guests is: “Should I visit East or West Nusa Penida?”
The answer is simple: both sides offer a completely different experience. The West is famous for its dramatic postcard landscapes such as Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, and Angel’s Billabong, while the East is known for Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, and spectacular cliffside viewpoints.
So rather than asking which side is “better,” I recommend choosing the side that matches what you want to see and how you want to spend your day.
West Nusa Penida: The Classic Nusa Penida Experience
When guests tell me, “This is my first time in Nusa Penida and I want to see the famous places,” I usually explain the West Nusa Penida route first.
The west side is home to some of the island’s most recognizable landscapes and is a popular choice for first-time visitors. The main attractions include Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and Crystal Bay.
1. Kelingking Beach
Kelingking is probably the view most people associate with Nusa Penida.
From the famous viewpoint, you can see the limestone headland extending into the ocean, creating the shape that many visitors compare to a T-Rex. Below it is a beautiful beach surrounded by steep cliffs.
As a host, I always remind guests that you don’t have to hike down to the beach to enjoy Kelingking. The viewpoint itself offers the famous panorama and is much easier to include in a busy day tour.
The descent to the beach is considerably more demanding, so guests should consider their fitness, available time, weather, and footwear before attempting it.
2. Broken Beach
From Kelingking, we can continue to Broken Beach, locally known as Pasih Uug.
The main attraction here is the enormous natural arch formed in the limestone coastline. Ocean water flows through the opening, creating a spectacular circular coastal landscape.
It is primarily a viewpoint and photography destination, so I usually recommend taking your time to enjoy the scenery rather than trying to rush through it.
3. Angel’s Billabong
Angel’s Billabong is another natural attraction located close to Broken Beach.
The rock formation creates a natural pool-like area overlooking the ocean. The appearance of the water can change depending on tides and sea conditions, so I recommend following local safety guidance rather than assuming the water is always suitable for entering.
4. Crystal Bay
Crystal Bay gives the west route a different atmosphere.
Instead of dramatic cliffs alone, you get a beautiful coastal area with clear water, palm trees, and a more relaxed beach setting. Crystal Bay is also known as one of Nusa Penida’s snorkeling areas and is a popular place to enjoy the sunset because it faces west.
Tips: If your priority is iconic Nusa Penida scenery and you only have one day, the West route gives you a concentrated selection of the island’s most recognizable attractions.
East Nusa Penida: Beaches, Cliffs & Scenic Landscapes
Now let’s talk about the East Nusa Penida route.
The atmosphere is different. Instead of focusing mainly on the famous west-coast landmarks, the East route takes you toward spectacular beaches, limestone cliffs, offshore rock formations, and panoramic viewpoints.
The main attractions include Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, Thousand Islands Viewpoint, and Rumah Pohon Molenteng.
1. Diamond Beach
Diamond Beach is one of the highlights of the eastern coast.
From the viewpoint, you can see white sand, turquoise water, dramatic limestone cliffs, and distinctive rock formations offshore.
There is a staircase leading down toward the beach, but the descent is steep. For many guests, the viewpoint alone is already enough to appreciate the scenery.
If you love photography, this is definitely a place where I recommend taking your time.
2. Atuh Beach
Just around the eastern coastline is Atuh Beach, another beautiful coastal destination surrounded by cliffs and unusual rock formations.
Compared with Diamond Beach, Atuh can feel more like a place to slow down and enjoy the bay. The two destinations are close enough to combine in the same East Nusa Penida itinerary.
3. Thousand Islands Viewpoint
If you enjoy panoramic views, Thousand Islands is another memorable stop.
From the viewpoint, you can see multiple small islands and dramatic cliffs stretching along the coastline.
This is also where you will find the famous Rumah Pohon Molenteng, or tree-house viewpoint, which has become a popular photography spot.
4. Teletubbies Hills
Depending on your itinerary and available time, you can also visit Teletubbies Hills.
The rolling landscape provides a completely different view of Nusa Penida compared with the coastal cliffs. It can be a nice addition for travelers who want to see more of the island beyond the beaches.
Which Side Should You Choose?
Instead of giving every traveler the same answer, I like to ask my guests what they are hoping to experience.
Choose West Nusa Penida if you want:
- To see Kelingking Beach
- Iconic Nusa Penida photography
- Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong
- A classic first-time Nusa Penida experience
- A west-coast itinerary with Crystal Bay
Choose East Nusa Penida if you want:
- Diamond Beach
- Atuh Beach
- Dramatic white-sand beaches
- Coastal cliff viewpoints
- Thousand Islands scenery
- A different side of Nusa Penida
Both routes involve hilly and sometimes narrow roads, and popular viewpoints can become busy. Planning your stops around your available time is therefore important.
Can You Visit East and West Nusa Penida in One Day?
Technically, yes. But I would plan it carefully.
This is something guests often ask us when they have only one day on the island.
You can create an itinerary that combines attractions from both sides, but crossing the island takes time. Current route guides recommend allowing a separate day for each side when possible because the attractions are spread across the island and the roads can make transfers slow.
If your main goal is to see as many highlights as possible, an East & West combination tour can work.
However, if your goal is to slow down, take photographs, enjoy the scenery, and spend more time at each attraction, I recommend dedicating a full day to one side.
For our guests at Bali Penida Gili, we can also help arrange the route based on your boat schedule, preferred attractions, and available time.
Tips one day tour to Nusa Penida
After helping guests explore the island, there are a few things I always recommend.
1. Don’t try to see everything
Nusa Penida may look small on a map, but travel between attractions can take longer than expected.
It is better to enjoy several places properly than spend the entire day rushing from one viewpoint to another.
2. Start early
Popular attractions can become busy later in the morning, particularly on the West route. Starting early can give you a more comfortable experience and more time for photographs.
3. Wear comfortable shoes
Both East and West Nusa Penida include viewpoints and walking routes. Some beach descents involve steep stairs, so comfortable footwear is important.
4. Bring water and sun protection
The combination of tropical temperatures, walking, and exposed viewpoints can be tiring. I recommend bringing drinking water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
5. Don’t judge a beach only from its photos
Many Nusa Penida photographs are taken from viewpoints.
Diamond Beach, for example, can be spectacular from above without requiring you to walk all the way down to the sand.
So, Is East or West Nusa Penida Better?
If you are still undecided, think about what you want to remember from your Nusa Penida trip.
If the image in your mind is Kelingking’s famous T-Rex cliff, Broken Beach, and Angel’s Billabong, choose the West route.
If you are dreaming about Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, limestone cliffs, and panoramic ocean views, explore the East.
And if you have enough time, why choose only one? Spending one day exploring the West and another day discovering the East allows you to experience the island from two very different perspectives.
At Bali Penida Gili, we love helping our guests choose a route that fits their travel style rather than simply following a fixed list of attractions. Whether you want a Nusa Penida West Tour, East Tour, snorkeling experience, or East & West combination, we can help organize your island adventure.
